Melamine, commonly known as "melamine", "protein essence", "mi'an (Chinese pinyin: mi'an)", is a triazine nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic compound, often used as a chemical raw material. It is a white monoclinic crystal, almost odorless, slightly soluble in water (3.1g/L at room temperature), and soluble in formaldehyde, acetic acid, hot ethylene glycol, glycerol, pyridine, etc. It is insoluble in acetone, ether, and is harmful to the body. It should not be used in food processing or as a food additive. However, some unscrupulous merchants mixed melamine into dairy products to increase the nitrogen content level when conducting protein content tests.
