Cetyl alcohol is a mixture of natural or synthetic fatty alcohols, mainly composed of cetyl alcohol (C16H33OH) and stearyl alcohol (C18H37OH) (the ratio of the two is usually 3:7 to 7:3, with slight differences in production processes). It appears as a white to slightly yellowish waxy solid, in the form of flakes or granules, with a hard texture and a slight fatty odor. It is insoluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and chloroform, and can be completely dissolved in hot oils.
