Ginkgo biloba extract is obtained through a multi-step purification process that concentrates active compounds while removing toxic ginkgolic acid. The extract contains both polar components (flavonol/flavone glycosides, standardized to 24%) and nonpolar components, including diterpenes (ginkgolides A, B, C, J, M), bilobalide (a sesquiterpene), and other minor compounds (standardized to 6% terpenes). It exhibits vasodilatory effects, improving arterial and venous circulation, enhancing tissue perfusion and cerebral blood flow. Additionally, it reduces capillary permeability, fragility, erythrocyte aggregation, and blood viscosity. These effects may result from inhibition of prostaglandin/thromboxane biosynthesis, modulation of catecholamines, and the potent PAF (platelet-activating factor)-blocking action of ginkgolide B.
