Twain 80 is an artificial synthetic non-ionic emulsifier, widely used in cosmetics, food industries and pharmaceutical preparations. Its industrial manufacturing method is as follows: under alkaline catalysis, ethylene oxide reacts with sorbitol fatty acid esters and sorbitan fatty acid esters, with each 1 mole of sorbitol or its corresponding sorbitan anhydride undergoing a reaction with 20 moles of ethylene oxide. This type of emulsifier was first developed by the American company ICI. Twain is the trade name given by ICI to this type of emulsifier, and different numbers are assigned according to the different types of fatty acids used in the synthesis process to form a complete trade name, such as Twain 60, Twain 80, etc.
