Sodium dodecyl sulfate is an anionic surfactant and a typical representative of sulfate surfactants. It is referred to as SDS, also known as AS, K12, sodium coconut sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and foaming agent. The products sold on the market are usually white to slightly yellow crystalline powder, non-toxic, slightly soluble in alcohol, insoluble in chloroform and ether, easily soluble in water, and has good compatibility with anions and non-ions. It has good emulsification, foaming, penetration, detergency and dispersibility, rich foam, and fast biodegradation, but its water solubility is inferior to sodium fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate (abbreviated as AES).

Sodium dodecyl sulfate has excellent cleaning, emulsification and foaming power. It can be used as a detergent and textile auxiliaries.
