Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE), chemically known as polyethylene glycol mono-4-nonylphenyl ether (C15H24O(C2H4O)n), is a nonionic surfactant widely used in industrial and household cleaning products, pesticides, paints, textiles, and cosmetics due to its excellent detergency, wetting, and emulsifying properties. It appears as a pale yellow to brown viscous liquid with a distinct odor, synthesized from the polymerization of nonylphenol and ethylene oxide. Despite its utility, environmental concerns have led to regulatory restrictions on its use, particularly regarding aquatic toxicity and biodegradability.
