Carbamazepine is a white or off-white crystalline powder. It belongs to the dibenzazepine class of antiepileptic drugs and has similar antiepileptic effects as phenytoin sodium. It is most effective for psychomotor seizures, and is also effective for grand mal seizures, localized seizures, and mixed seizures. Carbamazepine is better than phenytoin sodium in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy and can be used for trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It can also be used to treat arrhythmias and diabetes insipidus.

It can also be used to treat arrhythmias and diabetes insipidus. The oral LD50 for mice is 3750mg/kg, and that for rats is 4025mg/kg.
