Toxicity

A hallucinogenic (psychedelic) agent. It may catalyze the onset of emotional problems or psychosis in predisposed individuals. Although the mechanism of action for hallucinogens is not understood, DOM is believed to act by being an agonist at serotonin 5-HT2 receptors. It causes hyperreflexia, restlessness, and perceptual alterations in illusions, including changes in touch, taste, and odor, and the thinking process is substantially altered. At high doses, hallucinations and loss of contact with reality result. The duration of action may be 16-24 h. Its LD50 is in mice 36 mg/kg, i.v., in rats 32.5 mg/ kg, i.p., in dogs 7.2 mg/kg, i.v., and in monkeys 8 mg/kg, i.v.
